This Friday’s Screening: Helvetica, the movie

Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which is celebrating its 50th birthday this year) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. Helvetica is currently screening at film festivals, museums, design conferences, and cinemas worldwide, and is coming soon to the W+K screening room. Hanif Kureshi, resident type-geek and Helvetica fetishist has designed a poster (although it would have been a lot easier just to yell across the room to inform the four and a half people that comprise our office) and shared it with us. Let it be known that the writer is aware that the word ‘which’ in the headline is superfluous but Hanif refuses to delete it because it upsets his poncy design.

The truth is out there

Vasant Vihar is a quiet, upscale residential neighbourhood in Delhi. Or is it?  Siddharth Loyal, longtime resident of Vasant Vihar and W+K  employee, has reason to believe that there’s more to the neighbourhood than just bungalows and multiplexes. Right next to the Bus Depot, near a lone tree, are a network of spooky caves. It’s not on any map. And it’s not on Google Earth. But it’s there. The fact that this came up when Siddharth was heavily under the influence shouldn’t be held against him. He maintains his story even much later, when stone cold sober. In the face of much ridicule and torment, Siddharth has challenged everyone at W+K and on the planet to a wager – Rs. 40,000 will be handed over in crisp 500 rupee notes to anyone who can spend a night in the afore-mentioned caves. Any takers?

Outtakes from the Dance Girl Sequence

The ‘Duckie’ commercial featured among other things – a goggle-eyed freak, flying rickshaws, silver painted wrestlers, four midgets, a bathtub filled with milk and we even threw in a Bollywood dance girl, for good measure. Client’s first reaction on seeing the film: Can we add something to this film that will make it ’sticky’ in the viewer’s mind?
